Creativity and Innovation

A view from INSEAD on Creativity and Innovation

December 2009

Hal Gregersen is a Senior Affiliate Professor of Leadership at INSEAD where he pursues his vocation of executive teaching, coaching, consulting, and research by exploring how leaders in business, government, and society discover provocative new ideas, develop the human and organizational capacity to realize those ideas, and ultimately deliver positive, powerful results.

"Innovation is about extending ourselves out, opening the boarders to ideas, and seeing things we've never seen before." In this video Professor Gregersen goes on to explain that we need to get back in touch with our four year old selves.

"Here is my proposition. If you are sitting and thinking 'I would like my team to be innovative, I would like my organisation or even my country to be more innovative', what I suggest is stepping back, and leaving this room with one commitment." He continues, "I'm asking you to make a commitment about the little people around you. What if everybody in this room chooses one child, a nephew, a niece, a daughter or a son, and then decides they are going to pay attention to that person's curiosity. They're going to care about the questions they ask, they're going to care about the observations they make. That, more than anything else, will make a profound difference."

Professor Hal Gregersen is Programme Director of the Learning to Lead programme, and is a contributing faculty member on the Management in the Humanitarian Sector programme.
