Operations Management and R&D
INSEAD Programmes and Research
Our highly respected Operations Management professors develop teaching materials for executives based on their own cutting-edge research. Here are just a few of the areas in which we can offer you the benefit of our very latest thinking.
Innovation. We are one of a very few top business schools that has a huge proportion of innovation-related faculty. Their work covers product, technology, process and business-model innovation. While others focus on how to do day-to-day operations, we discuss how to innovate through them. We also develop measures of innovation readiness, both at corporate and national policy levels, with a special emphasis on emerging markets.
Globalisation. We offer strategies that derive from our research, case-writing and consulting experiences throughout the world. Our faculty is responsible for leading research in technology and competitiveness assessment models that are conducted across more than 130 countries in collaboration with global partners such as the World Economic Forum. The Global Information Technology Report, a recent research report by Soumitra Dutta, presents a detailed assessment of technology and competitiveness for 138 economies.
Networks. Globalisation has necessitated network-based solutions to meet customer demand in a wide range of industries. Recent books by INSEAD professors offer exciting new ideas for a wide range of industries, especially in risk management and value-based management, including Competitive Supply Chains: A Value-Based Management Perspective by Enver Yücesan.
Sustainability/CSR/closed loop supply chains. INSEAD has always been at the forefront of applying the latest philosophies and techniques to non-traditional areas such as green operations, sustainability and humanitarian logistics.
Behavioural operations. While most academic models assume economic rationality, many studies show that human decision making is not always rational. A growing literature, led by INSEAD faculty, is now focusing on behavioural aspects of operations that have significant influence on collaborative practices across global ecosystems. Our faculty is also studying the impact of new technologies such as social media on organisational practices and digital life styles. Recent publications from our faculty include Consumer-Driven Demand and Operations Management Models by Serguei Netessine and Christopher Tang.
Quality of management – Best Factory Awards. While pursuing cutting-edge, innovative applications, our research does not ignore the basic principles of operational excellence. This research is complemented by our long-running Best Factory Award, which recognises best-run operations in France, Germany and Eastern Europe. Our experience has been documented in various books, including Management Quality and Competitiveness: Lessons from the Industrial Excellence Award by Christoph Loch, Stephen Chick and Arnd Huchzermeier.
Technology impact on global collaboration dynamics. The unique management simulations we have recently developed (EagleRacing, Synergy, Mayday, WhatADay!, InnoTube) to address the challenge of global collaboration in teams and organisations provide a basis for designing unique learning experiences. Through these highly involving simulations executives are helped to understand how technologies like Web 2.0 are changing the way people collaborate effectively in global organisations to achieve operational excellence as well as client-centered innovation.
Technology and organizational change in cross-cultural contexts. Technology provides continuous stimuli to redesign individual processes as well as rethink the structure of organisations. Still, many large technology-enabled change projects tend to fail. The simulations we have developed – and that have been adopted in many other top business schools – address the challenge of managing technology-enabled change projects in a highly effective way.
At INSEAD, we have a wide range of programmes that will help executives address the challenges related to Operations Management:
