Governance and Top Management

INSEAD Programmes and Research

Ever since INSEAD launched Europe’s first ever Executive Education programme for senior managers in 1968, we have been concerned with the challenges faced by those at the very top of companies and beyond – on their boards. In 2010, we launched our latest innovation, the INSEAD Corporate Governance Initiative, which is dedicated to promoting global best practice at board level.

Our Executive Education programmes for top managers are supported by much of our vast research output – but most specifically by the following research streams.

Corporate Governance, particularly the work of the new INSEAD Corporate Governance Initiative, led by Professor Ludo Van der Heyden. It is currently pursuing new research on: convergence and divergence of European board practices; composition and culture of boards; CEO succession; understanding investors; setting and monitoring progress – from strategy to execution; managing risk; evaluating top management performance; and ethical principles of board membership.

Pyschoanalytical approaches to leadership, particularly the work of the INSEAD Global Leadership Centre, directed by Professor Manfred Kets de Vries. Famous for his work across the field of leadership, Professor Kets de Vries has always paid particular attention to psychology of senior leaders. For example, his book Sex, Money, Happiness, Death, encourages top managers to look beyond success to what really makes them happy in life and to go beyond egotism to what he calls 'constructive narcissism'. In addition his unique group coaching techniques, which he also uses in his teaching, have proven highly successful when applied to the entire senior management teams of companies.

Global interconnectedness, particularly the the work of Professor Subramanian Rangan, who holds the Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Court Endowed Chair in Societal Progress. As well as carrying out his research into global strategy and multinational enterprises, Professor Rangan chairs the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on Emerging Multinationals.

Business leadership and society, particularly the work of Professor N. Craig Smith, who holds the INSEAD Chair in Ethics and Social Responsibility. He is following in the footsteps of Emeritus Professor, Henri-Claude de Bettignies, who pioneered the study of ethics and leadership at INSEAD in the 1970s and continues to play an influential role. The philosophy of researchers in this stream is that the definition of business leadership should expand to cover responsibility to society and the world as a whole, as well as to shareholders and employees. They work on areas such as the strategic drivers of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and the design and functioning of leadership teams – who set the tone for responsible leadership throughout the organisation, yet are also the most susceptible to abuses of power.
