Learning process

Under the guidance of an experienced faculty team, each family reflects on its own situation by:

  • Taking an active role in the learning process
  • Participants take an active role in the learning process, working on cases in groups, role playing, and practicing communication tools.

Sharing experiences

Interaction between different families and mutual coaching are fostered through exercises throughout the programme.

Practising enhanced team communication

A distinctive feature of the programme is that participants work in their own family teams to apply the course learning, practice effective meetings, analyse their family history.

Developing an action plan

In their family meetings, participants work on their specific issues and develop an action plan.

Benefiting from a coaching approach

The faculty members are available to discuss with participants their specific questions. Faculty has long experience carrying out research and advising numerous international families.

Programme content

The Family Enterprise Challenge is a four-day educational programme for business families which covers the following key topics:

  • Introduction to the family business system and challenges
    • Interaction of family, ownership and business
    • Transitions: life, ownership and leadership
  • Interpersonal relationships
    • Communication and Fair Process
    • Conflicts
    • Family dynamics
  • Ownership, governance and strategy
    • Interaction of management, board and owners
    • Business and family institutions
    • Key strategic decisions (e.g. acquisitions and financing)
  • Succession, careers, leadership and agenda
    • Family meetings
    • Individual and family agenda

Wendel International Centre for Family Enterprise

The fast-growing field of family business is at the forefront of research and teaching at INSEAD. The activity initiated by the Wendel family (active in business since 1704) has received substantial support from several family businesses and individuals in Europe (Tetra Laval, Berghmans/Lhoist, and André and Rosalie Hoffmann). The Centre is dedicated to helping the owners and executives in family-controlled organisations address their specific issues. It conducts research, develops programmes and events. Family businesses can also benefit from tailor-made programmes for their owners and managers. Find out more
